This study aimed to determine if tremor affected the postural stability of older adults with Parkinson's disease (PD). Twenty-four older adults with PD participated in this study. Fourteen (58%) of the subjects had tremor of the limbs and/or face, and the remaining 10 (42%) had no tremor. Postural stability was assessed during stance and with eyes closed by measuring the total center of pressure (COP) displacement, velocity, and acceleration in the anterior-posterior (A-P) and medial-lateral (M-L) directions of the COP. Subjects with tremor were more likely to fall than subjects without tremor during stance (p = 0.05). The velocity of the COP was greater (p = 0.02) in the A-P direction in subjects with tremor, whereas no such difference was found in subjects without tremor. The different tests used to determine if a set of data are sufficiently bell-shaped (i.e. whether they are coming from a normal distribution) are done in a two-sided fashion.
